If you exercise you need to learn about the benifits of the foam roll. The foam roll is great as a self massage device. The foam roll has helped me most of all with the Iliotibial band (ITB) stretch. The ITB is a band that runs from the top of the hip to the side of the knee. When the ITB is tight it pulls the knee and can cause all sorts on knee pain. Iliotibial band syndrome is always best to rule out when experiencing knee pain. The best way to treat Iliotibial band syndrome is the following exercise on the foam roll.

I have always been a fan of the Rocky movies; not because they were well acted, but because the message conveyed was usually inspiration and highly motivating.  The character of Rocky shows us how perseverance, dedication, hard work, and continually picking yourself up and moving forward no matter what life throws at you are great lessons that translate well into our everyday lives, especially in these trying times.

Each time I watch one of the Rocky movies, I seem to have a light bulb moment.  The other day I caught Rocky IV.  That is the one where Rocky’s friend Apollo Creed is killed by the Russian boxer Drago, and Rocky decides to fight the guy himself.  Rocky takes off for Russia to train and fight.

Having a variety of workout options is indispensable to an effective long term training program and overall health. By definition, a workout can be made up of any exercise—weight training, body weight movements, stretching, band exercises, jump rope, jogging, running, biking, swimming, elliptical machine, stationary bikes and much more.

Underdeveloped rear delts will effect not only the aesthetic balance of your muscle symmetry, but could also lead to a shoulder injury and rotator cuff problem. In most cases the front delts are strong from all the traditional pressing movements such as push-ups, bench presses and overhead presses so they are typically over powering the rear delts when no exercises are done to focus on this area. By incorporating rear delt exercises into your training you will help to improve your strength over all and correct any imbalances over time.

The one thing I hear the most from people is just how little time they have to exercise. How we spend our time is just a reflection of where our priorities are. If there is the will you will always find the way. The desire has to just be for what the workout provides you rather than hoping to just get excited about the workout it’s self.

During my 5 years in the military I spent just about everyday doing some sort of workout. I learned that if you didn’t have access to the gym or time to go to the gym you simply got to be creative. I think everyone in the military is taught to improvise, adapt and overcome.

I do know I got very tired of doing hundreds of push-ups. It wasn’t long before I found ways to spice things up. Instead of just regular boring push-ups I would mix push-ups with other exercises. I would do push-ups on dumbbells so that I could add exercises between push-ups like rows, kickbacks, concentration curls, and front raises all from a push-up position. Fun stuff and the other exercise made the push-ups much more difficult.

I used to bring my dumbbells back and forth from home and work using my sea bag and one day I wanted to run with my pack and needed some weight so I took the weights from my sea bag to add to my pack. After running a couple of miles I realized just how painful the weights had become as they slapped against my back. Perhaps I should have just sucked up, but I felt I could find an easier way to add weight.
